Thing Library lets you borrow useful, fun, and unexpected items with your library card. Below are answers to common questions about borrowing, care, and donations.

Borrowing Basics

  • Who can borrow from Thing Library?
    Adults age 18 and over with a library card in good standing.

  • How many items can I borrow at once?
    Up to two (2) items at a time.

  • How long can I borrow items?
    One-week loan period. No renewals. Patrons must wait 24 hours before checking the item out again.

  • Where do I pick up and return items?
    Inside the Library during open hours.

  • What condition should items be returned in?
    Clean, dry, complete, and in good working order.

  • What if something is damaged or missing?
    Notify staff as soon as possible. Replacement or cleaning fees may apply.

  • What if I don’t know how to use an item?
    Many items include instructions. Staff are happy to help.

  • Are there late fees?
    Newtown Public Library is fine free. Patrons will be billed for items not returned on time. Fees may apply for damaged, missing, or excessively dirty items. This includes damaged cases.

  • Is the library responsible if something goes wrong?
    The Library is not responsible for injuries, property damage, misuse, manufacturing defects, or normal wear and tear.

  • What kinds of items are in Thing Library?
    Tools, kits, devices, and recreational items selected for safety, durability, and community use.

  • Are there items the library does not lend?
    Yes. Hazardous tools, medical devices, items requiring licenses, chemicals, and oversized or fragile equipment are not included.

  • Is this the full collection?
    No. We’re starting small and adding new items over time.

  • How will I know when new items are added?
    Check the website regularly or follow the Library on social media.

  • Can I suggest an item?
    Yes! Suggestions are welcome and help guide how the collection grows.

  • Can I donate an item?
    Donations are welcome but must be approved in advance.

  • How do I donate an item?
    Complete Thing Library Donation Form. Items may not be dropped off without prior written approval.
